Fancy a big family reunion in Gozo this winter? We have a solution.

Posted on 04 August 2018

These days it’s common for family members to live far apart, maybe even in different countries. And this can create a strong wish for a big reunion from time to time – whether it’s getting together to celebrate a special birthday, wedding anniversary, or maybe Christmas.

Gozo sits in the middle of the Mediterranean between mainland Europe and Africa and has been a meeting point for different cultures for thousands of years – from the first Sicilian farmers who settled here in 5,000 BC through the Ottomans and Knights of Malta, right up to the French and British. So it’s not surprising that Gozo makes a perfect family reunion destination.

We’ve noticed that some of our cluster properties on Gozo (rental properties situated close together) have often been booked by large groups, especially large family groups over the Christmas and New Year period. Winter on Gozo is typically mild and there is plenty to do and see.

Baron Holiday Homes Hamlet properties

For families planning a winter holiday reunion we would recommend our four Hamlet properties, all comprising beautifully renovated stone farmhouses and located near the village of Għasri. All four properties enjoy wonderful views of the sea, green undulating valleys, and spectacular sunsets.

Any combination of Hamlet properties can be rented together from mid-October through to the end of May for groups of up to 36 people. They provide a perfect, cosy setting for a winter getaway as they offer underfloor heating throughout, real fireplaces, plus heated indoor pools and access to a communal mini-gym and sauna.

And to make sure the kids are kept happy we have improved the wi-fi reach in all Baron Holiday Homes. This means guests can connect to the internet all over our properties, whether you are downstairs, upstairs, or lounging by the pool.

At Baron Holiday Homes, we pride ourselves on offering high quality, well-equipped, and stylish properties that will help you to enjoy your holiday on Gozo. But don’t just take our word for it!

It means a lot to us when a happy customer lets us know how much they enjoyed our properites. Here are a few customer reviews about our Hamlet properties from Trip Advisor:

“A family celebration and reunion”

“An idyllic location, quiet and yet conveniently situated not far from a supermarket. The villa fitted our purpose perfectly since we were celebrating a family occasion with our elderly parents.

“The ambience is very comfortable, cosy with hot flooring and very cosy bedrooms. It also has very good space for a games room and a fantastic jacuzzi. All necessities are provided both in bedrooms and the kitchen is well equipped with useful utensils, including a dishwasher! The view from the rooms is spectacular. The villa is also endowed with a private parking area”

The only place you should stay when in Gozo

“This is our ‘home away from home’ when we stay in Gozo. The level of comfort and relaxation provided is second to none. Views are lovely, location is peaceful, amenities perfect and plentiful. Imagine bbq-ing late at night under a starry sky or having a late-night dip in the pool. Winters are equally lovely with a functional fireplace plus underfloor heating. What more could you want?”

Great property to chill with grandchildren

“My wife and I travelled with my son, his wife and two young grandchildren. The hire cars were delivered to our hotel (in Malta)… and we were off to Gozo. Easy ferry across and back between Malta and Gozo – about 40 minutes. Well met by farmhouse rep. Easy journey to the property. On arrival everyone amazed at the standard of finish and amount of care taken to make sure our stay got off to a great start. The farmhouse is large and airy. The kitchen area was well equipped and became the central meeting place. The property has a barbecue – which is gas fired and big and worked straight away. The bedrooms were large and had en-suite. The beds were very comfy. We all slept well.

“The icing on the cake was the swimming pool. It is integral to the property. It can be one pool, both indoor and out, or a door can be closed to make it two pools. Nice touch are the jacuzzis one in, one out. No problem parking two cars in the area below the properties. There are good supermarkets close where all products you would expect in UK are available. Great walks around the island. Great photo opportunities. The island is so small that nowhere is more than 20 minutes away from the property. There are some amazing restaurants on the island. My son would move his family to live on Gozo! The natives are very friendly. An excellent holiday, an excellent property wholly recommended!”

Superb base to explore beautiful Gozo

“My wife and I had a wonderful stay at The Hamlet 3. The facilities at the villa and it’s location on Gozo are fantastic. We enjoyed exploring the island and were happy that we could start some of our coastal walks straight from the villa. There is also a bus stop near the villa but the island is really not that big. The villa was spotlessly clean and very well equipped. We enjoyed having an indoor pool, having bbq’s and being able to light a real fire in the lounge in the evenings. We also had a meal cooked for us in the villa by Chef George which was a superb end to our holiday.”

What to see around Għasri

Situated amid rolling green countryside, Għasri is the smallest village on Gozo with a population of around 600.

The skyline here is dominated by the nearby Ta’ Ġurdan (or Giordan) lighthouse, which dates back to the mid 1800s and is still in use today. There is a steep but lovely walk from the village up to the lighthouse and if you’re lucky the lighthouse attendant might let you climb up to the top to enjoy the superb 360° panoramic views.

Gozo’s capital, Victoria, is only 3km away – an easy drive or bus ride (Number 308) from the village. Our blog post on How to make the most of a day in Victoria has plenty of ideas on what to do and see there.

We also strongly recommend you follow the road from Għasri village square to the picturesque valley of Wied il-Għasri which is great for hiking and cycling, especially in the mild winter on Gozo. The valley winds to the sea and a small beach between limestone cliffs.

Things to do and see on Gozo in winter

The milder winter months on Gozo makes it easy to be out and about enjoying the island’s many scenic and heritage sites, such as the UNESCO World Heritage Ġgantija temples, which pre-date Stonehenge.

And for a small island, Gozo has an incredibly diverse and active events schedule, even in the winter months.

Christmas is huge on Gozo and is celebrated in style for weeks leading up to the main event itself, with villages and churches decorated with lights, special concerts, and plenty of nativity scenes, including the famous live action nativity at Għajnsielem. Our blog post Celebrating Christmas on Festive Gozo gives you a taste of what the island offers at this time.

And in February each year, it’s Carnival Season, including the weird and wonderful Spontaneous Carnival in the village of Nadur, as well as lots of child-friendly parades in Victoria. This is a great time to visit Gozo and experience some authentic culture. Our blog post Let Gozo’s Carnival Season Blow Away Your Winter Blues provides more information.

So – we hope we’ve whetted your appetite for a family reunion this winter on our lovely island of Gozo. If you have any questions – just get in touch via the Contact page on our website.
