Gozo is not only a great place for a destination wedding, it’s also a fabulous location to pop the question all year round. After all, you have to propose before there can be a wedding.

As Valentines’ Day approaches, some lucky people may well be thinking of surprising their loved with a marriage proposal. Whether you’re thinking of making the grand gesture on Valentines’ Day itself, or on your next holiday together – why not consider proposing on Gozo?

Our gorgeous island has lots of romantic potential – from stunning sunset cruises, to our ancient heritage sites, and from secluded caves, bays and inlets to a joining in with the locals on Valentine’s Day.

To get you thinking about where you might pop the question, we thought we’d suggest some of our favourite romantic places on Gozo.

Don’t forget, Baron Holiday Homes offers many in-house extra services to help you make the most of your Gozo holiday. If you’re planning a proposal, why not order one of our picnic hampers (starting from around €25) to take with you?

1. Add a dramatic backdrop to your Gozo proposal

There’s no shortage of stunning scenery on Gozo, so if you’re looking for nature to provide the right sort of backdrop to your romantic drama, you’re in luck:

Tal Mixta Cave

Gozo’s dramatic scenery is largely composed of limestone and our island has many caves – some underwater and some in surprising places. Tal Mixta cave is located high up on the south eastern side of Ramla Bay and has a fabulous view of Ramla’s red sand beach.

After you’ve climbed up to the cave and got your breath back you can surprise your partner with a romantic proposal to take their breath away again!

Wied il-Ghasri

Gozo’s own fjord, Wied il-Ghasri is a picturesque limestone gorge to the west of Mġarr Harbour. You enter the gorge from the village of Ghasri and can follow its course to where the sea enters between craggy limestone cliffs.

It’s popular with divers who like to explore the nearby sea caves, as well as bathers – you can enter the sea from a tiny pebbled beach.

For young lovers, it offers a beautiful, secluded spot to seal your future lives together, surrounded by the sound of waves and Gozo’s natural beauty.

Mġarr ix-Xini Bay

This delightful bay – the location for the 2014 Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie movie By The Sea – is a wonderfully romantic location. It comprises a creek and a narrow valley opening out into a secluded bay, and can be reached by car or on foot from the village of Xewkija.

The crystal-clear azure water of the bay are perfect for swimming and snorkelling – or simply admiring. And if you’re feeling energetic you can walk up the cobbled path to the Knight’s Tower on one of the headlands to admire the lovely view of the bay. It’s another perfect place to pop the question.

2. Soak up the atmosphere at Gozo’s ancient cultural sites

Citadella

The Citadella is one of the most famous landmarks on Gozo and commands majestic views across the whole island. It’s essentially a small fortified city within Gozo’s capital Victoria.

When you walk around the fortifications of the Citadella not only will you get stunning 360° views of Gozo – you’ll be stepping back in time to the 17th century when the Knights of Malta ruled.

Steeped in history and romance – all you need for that extra something is a beautiful sunset and the scene is set for an unforgettable proposal.

Ġgantija Temples

A visit to the UNESCO World Heritage Ggantija Temple complex at Xaghra will take you even further back in time.  This neolithic site is older than Stonehenge and dates back to between 3600 and 3200 B.C.

Think of all the hearts that have fluttered here over the past 5,000 years and add your own as you get down on one knee to ask that special question.

3. Make the most of a romantic Gozo sunset

What could be more romantic than watching the sun disappear into the sparkling Mediterranean Sea? Gozo offers some spectacular places to enjoy sunsets – and to pop the question while the mood is perfect.

Our west-facing coastline is the best place to catch the full splendour of a sunset on Gozo. We’d recommend: a picnic at Dwerja, dining al fresco at Xlendi, and perhaps best of all – a romantic sunset dinner cruise.

We are happy to help book a boat trip, or private boat charter, as well as advise on romantic places to eat. For more information see our blog posts Try Gozo For A Romantic Getaway and Gozo – Perfect All Year Round For A Romantic Break.

4. Celebrate Valentine’s Day with the locals

With such a romantic island home, it’s not surprisign that Gozitans themselves are pretty romantic and like to celebrate Valentine’s Day.

If you happen to be on holiday on Gozo in February then head to the Villa Rundle Gardens in Gozo’s capital, Victoria. The local custom is for couples to go there for a romantic stroll. In recent years the local government has started to decorate the gardens with twinkling lights to enhance the atmosphere.

And at nearby Independence Square you can find local bands performing at a special Valentine’s Day concert. So, if your partner said ‘Yes!’ you can dance the night away to celebrate.
