Five ways to get your heart pumping on Gozo

Posted on 20 July 2017

Our lovely island of Gozo is a fantastic destination for all sorts of holidays from family holidays, to active holidays, to romantic holidays. And our little island can even offer a surprising range of exciting things to do for those looking for thrills.

Here are five ways to get your heart pumping while you’re enjoying your holiday on Gozo.

Four-wheeled fun with Quad bikes on Gozo

Zooming along the coastal paths and shady alleyways of Gozo’s villages on quad bikes is great fun and a wonderful way to discover Gozo’s secrets. It’s easy and safe to do and you can either hire quad bikes by the hour, or join a guided quad bike tour with one of the specialist operators on Gozo. Whichever you choose, be sure to stop off along the way to capture the amazing views and to sample the delights of a Gozitan pastizzi or ice-cream.

Here’s a short video clip that gives you a good idea of what quad biking on Gozo is like:

Clubbing under starry skies on Gozo

There’s something liberating about dancing in the open air on a balmy summer night in Gozo. Our island offers a number of nightclubs for holidaymakers who still have energy in reserve but there is one special nightclub that offers a unique experience.

It’s only open in the summer, but La Grotta, not far from Xlendi Bay, has been described as  one of Europe’s finest outdoor clubs

Rock climbing and abseiling on Gozo

A mild climate and a great selection of spectacular limestone cliffs and crags have helped make Gozo a hugely popular destination for climbing enthusiasts.  And the island’s coves, caves and cliffs present a uniquely exciting way to explore Gozo.

Thanks to The Gozo Climbing Association (GCA), there are more than 350 recognised climbing routes on Gozo, including 60 bolted sports climbs which provide a great range of options for novices and expert climbers alike.

Climbing up and abseiling down Gozo’s limestone landscape is an exhilarating experience which will appeal to the adventurous holidaymaker. Read more about climbing on Gozo in our blog post Gozo will have you climbing up the (cliff) wall!

Going to the races on Gozo

If you’re English the phrase ‘horse racing’ probably conjures up images of jockeys in silks lining up at Ascot or Epsom on the beautiful grass racecourses of England. But things are a little different on Gozo.

We have our own dirt race track at Ta’ Xhajma, near Nadur, and jockeys certainly race on horseback during the main season which runs from October to May, with some events run in summer too.

But most visitors to Gozo are likely to be surprised by our traditional Maltese horse racing, where jockeys sit on two-wheeled gigs pulled by their horse. And most thrilling of all is when you get to see this style of racing close-up, on the streets of Gozo during the festa season!

Watching these mini chariots tearing through the streets is certainly a thrilling spectacle. The best known of these annual races is run during the feast of St Mary in August along the streets of Gozo’s capital, Victoria. Other races are run in Nadur, Xlendi, Ghasri, Xaghra, Xewkija and Zebbug during the summer festi season.

Underwater exploring on Gozo

Crystal clear sea, stunning underwater typography including caves, reefs and wrecks, it’s not surprising that Gozo is hailed as one of the best places in the world to go diving.

Whether you’re a novice or an experienced dive master, you’ll find the waters off Gozo offer a thrilling scuba diving experience just about all year round due to our island’s Mediterranean climate.

Some of the top dive spots around Gozo include:  The Blue hole in Dwejra, the reef and tunnel at Xlendi, the waters beneath the towering Ta’ Cenc cliffs, and the calm waters at the picturesque Mgarr ix-Xini.
