I spy with my little eye … the best views on Gozo

Posted on 06 July 2017

Gozo – a little jewel-like island set in the turquoise Mediterranean sea – is known for its stunning coastline, honey-coloured villages, its beautiful and numerous churches, and its friendly hard-working people.

And surprisingly, for its size, Gozo has many stunning views to offer. Wherever you are on the island, there’s always some lovely vista to enjoy.  We thought we’d list some of our favourite vantage points where you’ll get the best views on Gozo. Of course, there are many more places that offer wonderful views – if you’re planning a holiday on Gozo, why not see if you can add to this list?

There’s nothing like the first glimpse of Mgarr Harbour coming into view as you travel across to Gozo on the ferry from Malta. It’s a sight that gladdens the heart of all Gozitans and we know that visitors to our lovely island also feel the same way. For different views of the harbour you can enjoy a drink or a meal at one of the harbourside bars or restaurants, and there’s a stunning view looking down on the harbour from the nearby Fort Chambray area.

There’s no avoiding the The Citadel, or Ċittadella, which sits atop a hill at the centre of Gozo’s capital, Victoria. You can see it for miles just about wherever you are on Gozo. This ancient fortified city-within-a-city is a fascinating place to visit with a long history to explore.

Inside the Citadel you can visit Gozo Cathedral and many interesting museums. And, best of all, if you walk around the fortified walls of the Citadel you’ll be able to take in the whole of Gozo in a breathtaking, panoramic 360° view.

Ramla Bay, with its famous red-gold sandy beach, is the perfect place for swimming, sunbathing and just relaxing with the family.

We love this view of Ramla beach, which you can see from nearby Tal-Mixta cave, found in the cliffs on the western side of the bay. You descend into the cave down a short flight of stone steps and then the view opens up right there in front of you, framed by the edges of the cave.

More commonly known as the Rotunda of Xewkija, this is Gozo’s largest church and features the world’s third highest unsupported dome, some 75 metres high.

There is a lift (€3) which takes you to the gallery where you can walk around the top of the church, the views are tremendous.

At the end of a long day sampling the many visual delights of Gozo, we suspect that most people’s favourite view will be that seen from the side of the swimming pool at one of our Baron Holiday Homes!

Cheers!
