GET OUT AND WALK – THE BEST WAY TO SEE STUNNING GOZO!

Posted on 28 October 2016

Gozo may be roughly the same size as Manhattan (67 km² / 26 square miles) but the similarity ends there! Gozo has an amazing coastline, more than 300 days of sunshine every year, sparse traffic, and a tranquil and unspoilt countryside. No hustle, no bustle.

Straying off the beaten track on foot is one of the best things to do in Gozo. The island is a perfect destination for a walking holiday, especially during the cooler months between October and May.

Gozo’s spectacular coastline and rugged landscape will interest serious ramblers, while those who prefer a more leisurely pace will be happy to explore Gozo’s sleepy villages, picturesque valleys, and ancient monuments.

Variety of walks

Whether you are staying in one of Baron Holiday Homes’ converted farmhouses, a villa or an apartment, there are plenty of interesting local walks to be explored.

However, if you want to get out and see more of Gozo, why not check out the range of 10 different country walks and rambles on the VisitGozo website.

These walks are available as handy downloadable pdfs, providing detailed maps and informative descriptions of what you can see en route, and where you can get refreshments.

Each walk takes in some of the most iconic landmarks of the island, including the famous salt pans on the north coast of Gozo, the Azure Window arch on the west coast near Dwejra Bay, the picturesque fishing inlet Daħlet Qorrot near Nadur, and the wonderful views from Xlendi Tower.

Gozo Coastal Walk

To really appreciate the natural heritage and rich history of Gozo, why not try walking some (or all) of the 50 km Gozo Coastal Walk? This is one of the best walks in the Maltese Islands and comprises four sections which can be walked, ran, or cycled, each varying in difficulty from easy to hard.

The Coastal Walk takes in many of Gozo’s natural, archaeological, and cultural treasures, via limestone paths, rural tracks, and quiet roads. You can take public buses to and from many points along the way and there are plenty of cafes offering a refreshing pit stop.

And the great thing is you can do these self-guided walks at your own pace, stopping wherever and whenever you want – to have lunch and take in the view, or choosing a picnic spot.

Section 1: Mġarr – Xlendi (12km, moderate, 5-6 hours walk)

This walk begins at the harbour of Mġarr and offers spectacular sea views around the rugged north coast of Gozo, including the stunning Ta’Cenc Cliffs, an Important Bird Area as they are home to thousands of shearwaters during the breeding season.

Section 2: Xlendi – San Lawrenz (11km, moderate, 4-5 hours walk)

This walk takes in some of the most iconic landmarks of Gozo – including the Azure Window at Dwerja Bay, and finishes in the main square of the lovely village of San Lawrenz.

Section 3: San Lawrenz – Marsalforn (11 km, easy, 4-5 hours walk)

From San Lawrenz, the walk continues through rural countryside, dramatic wind-sculpted cliffs and on to the 350-year-old salt pans near Marsalforn , where sea salt is still traditionally harvested.

Section 4: Marsalforn Mġarr (16km, hard, 6-7 hours walk)

This section of the Coastal Walk includes stunning panoramic views both inland toward Gozo’s capital, Victoria, as well as of the beautiful Mediterranean Sea. Highlights include Ramla Bay, with its famous red sand, lovely Daħlet Qorrot – a quiet inlet used by fishermen – and Ħondoq Bay.
