From paddleboarding to diving – make the most of Gozo’s beautiful sea

Posted on 08 September 2017

Gozo’s hot summers and mild winters mean warm sea temperatures for most of the year, making our lovely island the perfect destination to enjoy messing about in, under, and on the sparkling Mediterranean Sea.

Whether you’re a watersports fan or an enthusiastic beginner, there’s a water-based activity on Gozo that will suit most abilities, tastes and ages. This blog post looks at three fun ways to make the most of Gozo’s beautiful azure sea.

Paddleboarding

One of the latest watersports to be introduced on Gozo is stand up paddleboarding (SUP). SUP is a great way to explore the spectacular caves and gullies along the coast of Gozo. You can go at your own pace and stop when you feel like it for a refreshing swim, a thrilling jump off the rocks, or even to do yoga on your board!

Baron Holiday Homes is happy to arrange an SUP adventure for our guests. See our website for details. You can choose from a variety of experiences with professional and friendly guides, including:

– around the coast of Gozo

– sunset tour of Dwerja Bay

– day/night trip to Comino (includes overnight camping on Comino).

Sailing

Another fun way of exploring the coves and coastline of Gozo and the Maltese islands is by boat – you have the choice of private charter, or guided trips and from small yachts and motorised launches up to a large sailing boat, and even a glass-bottomed boat.

Some companies offer fishing trips and will provide all the equipment and expertise. Fishing trips range from coastal waters where you might catch snapper, and mackerel, right up to deep sea sports fishing for swordfish and long fin tuna.

Our boating partner has been organising boat trips and tours for many years. They have many different types of boats from power boats right up to the Barbarossa itself – a 75 foot motor sailing yacht licensed and insured for up to a maximum of 80 people. You can choose between a half-day sail around Comino, fishing trips, harbour cruises, up to a full-day 3-island sailing trip around Gozo, Comino and Malta.

Among the many other interesting boating experience options on Gozo is to book a trip, which offers day trips with lunch or sunset trips with dinner onboard. Excursions can be tailored to your needs and can include swimming and snorkelling.

And for a real treat, why not consider chartering a motor yacht for a private trip for you and your family and friends? See our website for details.

Scuba Diving

Unless you’re a real scuba diving enthusiast, you’ll probably not be aware that Gozo is considered as having some of the best dive sites in the Mediterranean. In 2014 Gozo was voted as the second best diving destination in the world by readers of Diver magazine.

And the good news is that you don’t have to be an expert diver to enjoy exploring the amazing undersea tunnels, caves, wrecks, and reefs that can be around our island. The sea off Gozo is beautifully clear. And with sea temperatures that rarely dip below 13ºC, it’s possible to dive for most of the year.

Baron Holiday Homes is happy to help find the right dive trip to suit your needs. There are several professional diving companies on Gozo offering professional diving trips with fully qualified instructors. Some of the most popular dive sites include Mgarr ix-Xini, the Inland Sea, and the spectacular Blue Hole on Gozo’s dramatic west coast.

Snorkeling

The sea around Gozo is perfect for snorkelling from August right through to October. There are companies that will provide gear, instructions and guided snorkelling trips that are safe for most ages.

If you are confident at snorkelling and hire gear for an independent trip, the advice is to have a snorkelling buddy and stay within the safe swimming areas in the popular bays around Gozo and Comino. Remember to wear swimming shoes too, as Gozo’s coastline is very rocky.

Popular snorkelling sites around Gozo include: Marsalforn, Wied il-Għasri, Mgarr ix-Xini, San Blas Bay, Ħondoq ir-Rummien, The Blue Hole, and at Comino check out the Blue Lagoon (can get crowded in peak season) and the Santa Maria Caves.

There are lots of rock formations to explore, and if you’re lucky you’ll get to see banded sea bream, eels, sea cucumbers, sea urchins, octopus, parrot fish and coral.

Sea Kayaking

Kayaking is a great way for a family group, or bunch of friends, to explore the tranquil inlets and dramatic coastline of Gozo and nearby Comino. Like SUP, it’s an eco-friendly water activity as you move along under your own steam.

As with all the other watersport activities, we are happy to help you organise a kayaking trip – anything from a half day to a full day trip (with lunch), right up to a customised guided tour with opportunities for swimming and snorkelling.

You can really get up close to Gozo’s wonderful cliffs and caves in a kayak and, if you’re lucky you may get to see a friendly dolphin or two!
