Gorgeous Gozo: the romantic wedding destination

Posted on 28 September 2017

Gozo’s lovely climate, wonderful scenery, and relaxed lifestyle make it an ideal Mediterranean wedding destination.

Our blog post on Gozo as a romantic getaway covers some of the things that you can do on a honeymoon. The Spanish who named Gozo in 1282 clearly recognised something special here as Gozo means “joy” in the dialect spoken at the time. So… getting married on Gozo is sure to bring an extra dimension of happiness to your special day.

Planning your wedding on Gozo

You can organise both religious and civil wedding ceremonies on Gozo (including same sex marriages). We recommend that you start planning your wedding by checking out the Visit Malta website which has a useful guide to all the various requirements, including the forms that you will need to complete and how much weddings can cost.

In terms of timing, it’s important to remember that legally in the Maltese islands you must submit a Request for the Publication of Banns (Form Rz1) and all supporting documentation not more than three months before your marriage and not less than six weeks before the marriage.

Couples are advised to have a confirmed date and venue for the wedding before making the request for the publication of the banns. Many couples choose to hire a local wedding planner to help guide them through the process.

Gozo wedding venue options

For those couples who want a religious wedding on Gozo, there are plenty of options available as our island is famous for its numerous and splendid cathedrals, churches and chapels. The beautiful Ta Pinu Basilica and Shrine is famous worldwide, as explained in our recent blog.

And Gozo’s varied scenery provides lots of sites for civil unions – from beach weddings to vineyards, to windmills, and the Citadella.

For a real-life example of a wedding on Gozo see this blog post about a couple who married in the Tal Lunzjata valley before hosting the wedding reception at the Ta’ Mena Estate.

Of course, Baron Holiday Homes’ rental villas and farmhouses also provide not just great honeymoon accommodation, but also ideal venues for receptions and wedding parties.

Gozo wedding stories

Here’s what Linsey McKnight had to say about her wedding which involved a large family party staying at The Hamlet:

“We stayed with Baron Holiday Homes with my family of 24 for our wedding last year. They were great villas and even gave us a free extra cleaning service for the villas on the day of the wedding. It was a brilliant experience having all my family together on beautiful Gozo!”

Guest Jetze Komrij shares his Gozo wedding story:

“I feel more serene the second I drive off the boat. I’ve always loved Gozo, in fact, we even held my wedding there (and rented a Baron villa for that week 🙂 and my daughter was also baptised there. I’ve always felt at home there, even if I’m Dutch, was brought up in France, and live in Malta. I prefer to keep returning to Gozo than go abroad. The strong bond I feel with the island is evidenced by the fact that I keep choosing to celebrate our special occasions there, and a week with family in one of your gorgeous villas would be amazing.”

Paul Smissen shares his Gozo wedding story:

“When we first arrived on the island for a 2 day visit we fell completely in love with the people, wine and the Island, the island impacted on us that much, we ended up arranging and having our wedding on the Island, we got married in Ta Pinu 8 years ago, and have been back many time since, and even came back to get our son blessed! Gozo holds a very special place in our hearts. We love GOZO!”

Rebecca Bell remembers her wedding on Gozo:

“Not only is it the island of a thousand wonderful childhood memories, but I fulfilled a long-held dream by getting married to my husband there last summer on the rocks at Dwerja at sundown. It was a magical day. Now my children will share those memories with us too. Gozo is firmly in all of our hearts and souls and will be for many more generations.”

Karen Wilkinson shares her wedding story on Gozo

“I came there for the first time with my mum who was getting married there. We stayed in Marsalforn overlooking the beautiful harbour. We arranged for a surprise horse and carriage to take my mum to the registry office, through the streets ringing bells, people waving everywhere, she felt like a queen. I drove around the island having beautiful cakes made for the big day by local patisserie. We then took a charter boat out of Xlendi to spend time swimming and snorkelling before dinner cooked by our captain Xavier. The night sky and stars we sat atop drinking hot chocolate with brandy and a lovely cake also made by the captain. All in all it made a wedding day so different and splendid.

We took the brides bouquet to Ta pinu to place on the altar to bless their marriage. We spent two weeks there diving in the blue lagoon chilling on Ramla bay beach visiting the azure window and simply just enjoying g the tranquil pace of life of this beautiful island with its crystal blue waters flora and fauna and friendly locals. I will never forget this experience and after only the one visit I would say I simply fell in love with the place. The helicopter ride home was only tinged by sadness because I didn’t want to leave. Stunning place.”
