SANTA MARIJA CELEBRATIONS IN VICTORIA: A BLEND OF RELIGION, TRADITION AND CULTURE

Every August, Victoria in Gozo celebrates the feast of Santa Marija with a vibrant mix of tradition, faith, and community spirit. From the morning Pontifical Mass to the lively evening procession and agricultural fair, the city comes alive. One of the day’s highlights is the historic horse race along Republic Street, a tradition dating back to 1587. Now sometimes held in the evening, the race remains a thrilling spectacle that reflects Gozo’s enduring heritage and the strong sense of pride among locals.
