Share your photos of the Azure Window to win a holiday on Gozo!

March 8 2017 will be a date that lives long in the memory for those who love our beautiful island of Gozo. For this is the date that Gozo’s beloved and world-famous limestone arch, the Azure Window, collapsed dramatically during a storm that brought rough seas and gale-force winds.
Rising 28 metres (92 feet) from the sea in Dwerja Bay on the spectacular west coast of Gozo, the Azure Window was an unforgettable sight for locals and visitors alike. Together with the Blue Hole and the Inland Sea, it made this stretch of Gozo’s coastline a major tourist attraction. It wasn’t surprising that it was the most photographed natural feature on Gozo, appearing regularly on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.
It also caught the eye of location scouts and has been used as a photogenic backdrop in many films and TV shows, including the fantasy TV drama Game of Thrones, and films such as Clash of the Titans and The Count of Monte Cristo. It also appeared in many advertisements and music videos.
Formed by the collapse of two sea caves a few thousand years ago, the Azure Window had been subject to a continuous process of erosion. Its collapse was inevitable but has broken the hearts of all those who love Gozo. We Gozitans were touched by how quickly the news of the Azure Window’s collapse spread around the world and at the outpouring of sympathy for its loss.
Pay tribute to the Azure Window
So, the Azure Window has gone but it certainly won’t be forgotten. The area still remains one of the best scuba diving destinations in the world and now divers will have the rubble of the arch to explore which, in time, will become a haven for corals and other marine life.
We know that our guests have plenty of photos of the Azure Window that they have taken over the years while on holiday on Gozo. So, we thought we would pay tribute to this iconic and special place by running a photo contest on our Facebook page as a fitting memorial. And one lucky person will win a seven-night stay at our beautiful new holiday home Sara, a three-bedroom converted farmhouse with private pool near Munxar.
All you have to do is upload your photo/s (with caption/s) of the Azure Window to the Baron Holiday Homes Facebook page. Whether it’s a dramatic sunset, or a fun family snap with the kids, we want to see your favourite shots of this magical place.
The deadline for entries is midnight (Gozo time) on 6 April 2017 and we will chose a shortlist of 10 photos for our Facebook fans to like, share and comment on between 10 and 25 April. The person who gets the most likes on their photo will be the overall winner of the contest. Full terms and conditions can be found here.
