Gozo - Beaches & Bays

Gozo is well known for its spectacular coastline with rugged cliffs but it also offers a selection of stunning beaches, bays and inlets

GOZO – BEACHES & BAYS

Gozo’s beaches and bays provide a perfect place to enjoy a peaceful, relaxing morning or afternoon sunbathing, swimming, snorkelling and diving.

Paddleboarding, kayaking and boat trips are also now available and you can read more about our water sports activities.

Starting on the north coast and going clockwise around Gozo, there are plenty of options to explore:

Marsalforn

The most popular beach resort on Gozo is Marsalforn, on the north-eastern side of the island. Marsalforn used to be Gozo's major seaport until the 17th century, when Mġarr Harbour was developed.

Marsalforn has a small sandy beach but offers some good diving, swimming, and other watersports. This is probably the busiest of the beach resorts in Gozo and the plentiful bars, cafes and restaurants mean you have a great choice of dining options.

Ramla Bay

Heading to the eastern side of Gozo, you'll find Ramla Bay. With its red sand, shallow sea, and quiet, undeveloped nature, its not surprising that Ramla was included in the Guardian's 10 of the best beaches in Europe for families.

San Blas Bay

The next bay to the east of Ramla is picturesque San Blas Bay. This hidden gem comprises a secluded and quiet little beach of red sand reached by a steep path down to the sea.

Dahlet Qorrot Bay

Just around the coast from San Blas is Dahlet Qorrot Bay, with a small sandy beach best known to the locals. The beach is tiny but you can swim off the rocks and enjoy watching the fishermen's boats.

Dahlet Qorrot is a stunning little bay and is a great place for an early morning swim.

Hondoq ir-Rummien

On the south eastern coast of Gozo you'll find the beautiful sandy beach of Hondoq ir-Rummien.

The beach is small and can fill up quickly so head there in the early morning.

Ix-Xatt l-Aħmar

To the west of Mġarr Harbour, is Ix-Xatt l-Aħmar. Although it has a pebbly beach, Ix-Xatt l-Aħmar is a fantastic spot for swimming and diving. And it's very quiet as this is one of Gozo's best kept secrets, reached by a narrow winding road from Għajnsielem.

The old guard post of Fort Chambray can be seen on the surrounding cliffs from the beach and scuba divers will love to explore the wreck of an old ferryboat ix-Xlendi which lies in the depths just beyond the bay.

Mġarr ix-Xini

Heading further west on the southern coast of Gozo you'll come to the lovely Mġarr ix-Xini – a secluded pebbly beach at the end of a gorge, surrounded by sheer cliffs.

This is a peaceful spot ideal for swimming and diving. In 2014, the movie By the Sea, starring Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, was partially filmed here.

Xlendi Bay

On the south western coast of Gozo, not far from the island's capital, Victoria, this is one of the main resorts on the island, with a small sandy beach. Here you can paddle, swim, snorkel and scuba dive.

Xlendi is a fishing harbour which shelters fishing boats all year round, which makes for an attractive view as you dine al fresco from one of the many cafes, bars and restaurants on the seafront.

Id-Dwejra

The western coast of Gozo is famous for its spectacular cliffs. There's only one beach on this side of the island, at Id-Dwejra. With very deep waters and dangerous swells, you need to be a strong swimmer, so this area is not suited for families with young children.

You can also swim at the Inland Sea, a small, shallow lagoon connected to the open Mediterranean Sea by a narrow tunnel through the cliffs. You can take boat trips through the tunnel and once in the open sea there are numerous caves and rock formations to explore.

This area of the coast offers some of the best scuba diving sites in the Mediterranean, and you can buy snacks and refreshments from gabbani (kiosks).

Wied il-Għasri

On the northern coast of the island you can find Wied il-Għasri, a small beach wedged between impressive cliffs.  Wied il-Għasri is a popular diving site as it has underwater caves to explore. It's also a nice quiet place to sunbathe and swim.

Ix-Xwejni and Il-Qbajjar

Finally, to the east of  Wied il-Għasri on the northern coast of Gozo are two shallow, pebbly beaches ideal for swimming and diving – Ix-Xwejni and Il-Qbajjar.

You'll find a few fishing boats here and refreshments are available from a couple of bars and restaurants.
